Research & Development Solutions

Reliability Improvement

We offer a structured failure analysis approach to identify root causes and improve reliability. Our detailed Root Cause Failure Cascade (RCFC) methodology helps eliminate failures through practical recommendations such as material selection, surface treatments, and redesigns. This results in more durable, efficient designs without compromising functionality.

Accelerated Aging

Our accelerated aging services simulate extreme conditions to rapidly predict a product’s performance and shelf life. By subjecting parts to stresses like temperature extremes, thermal cycling, vibratory and impact loads, moisture intrusion, and UV or sand exposure, we assess long-term durability. DTB’s structured framework includes preparing test coupons, designing aging matrices, and testing across various applications to accurately predict how products will perform under real-world conditions.

Energy Efficiency

We provide comprehensive on-site and in-house energy analysis and feasibility studies to optimize energy usage across systems. Our research focuses on regenerative braking energy capture, particularly in electric-powered trains, where wasted braking energy is typically lost as heat. DTB has explored and implemented on-train electrical storage systems that could recover megawatt-hours of energy daily. As a research partner with New York City Transit (NYCT), we conduct ongoing studies on energy efficiency, wheel/rail patch interaction, and data acquisition to improve energy usage and sustainability in transportation.

Diminishing Aircraft Parts

As aircraft age, sourcing replacement parts becomes more challenging. DTB provides R&D, reverse engineering, and prototype development services to extend the life of aging aircraft. By producing out-of-production spare parts, we help both government and commercial entities keep critical systems operational. As the demand for these parts rises, especially for aging aircraft, our technical expertise ensures continued support even when OEMs no longer manufacture or supply the necessary components. Our solutions address the growing shortage of spare parts, providing sustainable alternatives for mission-critical systems.

Explosive Blast
& Shock

DTB specializes in controlled pressure wave and shock pulse tests to replicate the effects of explosive threats, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other emerging hazards. With extensive experience in lightweight and medium-weight hammer shock testing, we adhere to MIL specifications while developing customized shock pulse test equipment and techniques. Our innovative, repeatable, and tunable testing methods significantly reduce the time and cost associated with live ordnance field trials, helping to improve the design of protective measures for military and defense applications.

High Temperature/ High Cycle Fatigue (FCF) Testing

We conduct high-temperature and high-cycle fatigue testing for military and commercial applications, including testing turbine blades, stators, and compressors at extreme temperatures ranging from 400°F to 1,800°F. Our custom-designed testing equipment, including hydraulic actuators with displacement control, improves upon traditional shaker-based systems. We also perform high-cycle fatigue testing using vibration shakers, precisely tuning components to resonant frequencies and applying stress levels while monitoring strain gage fatigue. Elevated temperature testing is supported by specially designed heating and cooling systems to ensure accurate data for critical materials used in demanding environments.

Alloy Application Development

Our alloy application services involve controlled testing to assess the thermal and damage profiles of new alloys. Through detailed microstructural analysis of damage and sub-damage zones, we assist in the alloy down-selection process, ensuring the most suitable materials for your project. Additionally, our high-fidelity component-level testing, including contact-severity-sensing feedback loops, enhances the data for optimal alloy selection, ensuring superior performance under a range of demanding conditions.

Automated Screening of Complex Assemblies

DTB has developed advanced automated screening systems to non-destructively evaluate complex assemblies. We screened over 100,000 sealed assemblies to determine the chemical composition of powder mixtures within steel and brass containers, achieving accuracy within 0.25%. The technology, implemented in less than four months, uses a master X-ray image algorithm for comparison, eliminating geometric deconvolution and correlating chemical composition with X-ray attenuation. This solution significantly enhances the screening process for large-scale operations, maintaining high accuracy and efficiency.

NDI Development

DTB specializes in developing tailored non-destructive inspection (NDI) techniques to meet the most stringent requirements. Using advanced technologies such as microfocus computed tomography (CT) with special beam hardening, we detect and quantify fiber defects like wrinkling and waviness in composite materials, including continuous glass fiber-reinforced epoxy-matrix composites used in helicopter blades. Our approach includes 3D reconstruction to analyze fiber defects in all orientations and generate critical-orientation serial sections. We validate these techniques through physical serial sectioning and comparison with CT data for accurate technique validation and probability of detection (POD) estimation.
